Kinetic sculpture workshop at Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Who remembers the opening scene to 1985 classic blockbuster Back to the Future? For the uninitiated: a camera pans across a messy work surface, taking in all manner of clockwork contraptions and electronic wizardry – cogs spin and gears grind shortly before diminutive skateboarding actor Michael J Fox is reluctantly roused from his sleep by a million ringing alarm clocks. Unfortunately Doc Brown and Marty were busy on Sunday 26th September (something to do with the Libyans) – the day of a kinetic sculpture workshop at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, but that opening sequence should give...

Brooding ‘summer’ rain clouds managed to hold off for a few hours on Saturday, just long enough for me to poke my camera lens about at a wood carving sculpture workshop at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The workshop was well attended, its populous sprinkled with a talented group of attentive sculptors taking on varying levels of artistic ambition. You’d never have known it’s the middle of Summer by looking at the sky above Bretton Country Park in mid-July: a patchwork of grey to black clouds with occasional bright blue holes puncturing the otherwise oppressive weather. The 14th-20th June 2010 is Refugee Week and I was proud to be part of the activities at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, exploring the experiences and raising awareness of asylum seekers in the UK. I was drafted in to provide event photography support for an all-day drama workshop hosted by Ice & Fire, a theatre company who “explore human rights stories through performance.” Through the story of ‘David’ a refugee from Darfur, Ice & Fire used drama techniques like thought tracking and short improvised performance to help a local school relive David’s experiences. They...

Crawling on all fours through thick undergrowth to photograph a family of clay hedgehogs and then being chased by a giant snake? All in a day’s work at the ‘Tread Softly Tracks and Traces’ event at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The brief was to capture engaging photographs of young aspiring artists enjoying a day in the sunshine, painting on walls, moulding clay and running about with bird puppets trailing behind them to mimic seasonal migration. The theme was “magical trails, moving sensitively through different habitats in the YSP landscape, creating for others to...
